Medical definition of nail fungus

A fungus infection of the toenails is medically known as onychomycosis or tinea unguium.

Though fungus can affect the fingernails it is more common on toenails because they are often exposed to warm and damp conditions when wearing shoes which facilitate growth of fungus.

Best toenail fungus treatment

Well, a toenail fungus infection is not easy to treat and it can take several months to see results. At times the infection may reoccur even after successful treatment.

Below are 3 main fungus treatments including the one I used to successfully get rid of my toenail fungus infection.

1) Topical medications and creams

The treatments are administered by applying them on the affected areas. These forms of treatments have generally been shown to be less effective compared to oral medication.

Medication does not reach all the affected area mainly due to the nails being hard to penetrate. Topical medications or cream also require regular use (daily application) which sometimes becomes a difficult task for people to stick to.

They are categorized into two:

a) Prescription creams and topical medication – these are prescribed by your doctor, some of these medications include; Ciclopirox, Efinaconazole.

b) OTC (Over-the-counter) creams and topical medication that don’t require any prescription and can be found in chemists and online stores.

2) Home remedies to treat toenail fungus

The Internet is filled with anecdotal information on how to cure toenail fungus using home remedies. Vinegar is a commonly recommended home remedy. Various oils such as coconut oil, oil of cedar leaf (Vicks VapoRub), and tea tree oil are also used as natural treatments for nail fungus. Research hasn’t been done on the treatments and the effectiveness of these home remedies is highly doubtful.

Application of household bleach and hydrogen peroxide is also not recommended due to lack of evidence that these treatments work. These agents can also cause unwanted skin irritation.

3) Oral medications

These have been shown to have a higher degree of effectiveness and take a shorter time to cure nail fungus. There are two types of oral medication:

a) Prescription oral pills

These are prescribed by your doctor and blood tests normally have to be conducted to determine if you they suitable for you. This is because some have side effects and may not be suitable for you if for example you have liver disease. Some of these drugs include, Griseofulvin, Terbinafine, Itraconazole, Fluconazole.

b) Over-the-counter oral medication & treatments for toenail fungus

These can also be found from chemists or online store. This is the category of medication that worked best for me and I was able treat my nail fungus.

The specific treatment I used is called Fungus Hack.
